How to pick the Best Web Hosting in Australia

Selection Criteria for WordPress Hosting Australia

When trying to find the best web hosting in Australia, it’s important to have selection criteria. There are essentials that all hosting providers should have and optional features depending on your unique requirements.

There are four pillars to all good hosting providers. These are Speed, Security, Stability and Customer Support. All of these should be considered essential.

Speed

Most people are impatient. Did you know that users expect a website loading time to be less than 2 seconds?

A slow website provides a poor user experience and increases the chances of visitors bouncing. An overall bad impression, which isn’t going to help you grow your business.

This is by far the most important factor when considering a hosting provider.

Security

The second most important thing is security. Managed Cloud Hosting providers like Cloudways and WP Engine have this covered. SiteGround too. But there are some shared hosting providers out there that unfortunately drop the ball. I won’t name names but security is obviously important. Imagine if someone hacked your hosting account and/or your website? They’d have access to it all. God knows what they would do with your info or the malicious code they’d add to your site (without you knowing!).

Stability

It’s possible to have a fast website but if it’s not stable, you’ll find that your website is completely down sometimes. This is called ‘downtime’ and should be zero or minimal.

Or sometimes your website is fast but other times it is slow. This is often due to a poor hosting provider and are common problems amongst shared hosting providers. For example, when the hosting provider runs server backups, your website would go down. Sometimes for hours.

So minimal downtime is important.

What’s the point of having a website if it doesn’t work at a time you really need it to?

Customer Support

Having amazing customer support that you can rely on 24/7/365 is a HUGE weight off the ol shoulders. Cloudways, WP Engine and SiteGround all provider world class support and will fix almost any problem within minutes via their online chat.

But if your hosting provider can’t fix problems in minutes, then you’re just wasting your most valuable asset; TIME.

How much is your time worth?

Web Hosting Mistakes: Things To Avoid

  • Avoid Cheap Hosting Providers
  • Avoid Slow Hosting Providers
  • Paying for SSL Certificates – e.g. GoDaddy makes you do this.

2020 Reviews – Best Web Hosting Australia

1. Cloudways

Cloudways is hands down the best hosting provider out there when you take into account speed, security, support and value for money. Their online support is world class (just like WP Engine and SiteGround) but there performance and loading times blow most hosting providers out of the water.

This is because you get access to all the best server infrastructure vendors in the world. You can even use the same servers that Google or Amazon use!

If you are looking for the best without it costing you an arm and a leg, then Cloudways is the way to go. You won’t regret it!

2. WP Engine

In terms of speed, stability, security and support, WP Engine is just as good as Cloudways. However it is more expensive and you’re limited to 1 website for their entry level plan.

You don’t have access to many of their server side functionalities like you do with Cloudways. And they have their own proprietary caching system. So if you have the budget and don’t mind a hosting provider that limits access to server settings, then WP Engine could be your ticket.

3. SiteGround

If you are about to build your first ever website, then SiteGround might be a good option for you.

I used SiteGround for a couple years, mainly because their online support was unmatched at the time. However, their speed and stability when loading websites was and still is slow when compared to Cloud Hosting providers like Cloudways and WP Engine. However, recently they have partnered with Google Cloud Platform to FINALLY get servers in Australia. For years they have been quite slow considering the nearest server was in Singapore. But not any more 🙂

SiteGround is one of the best (if not the best) shared hosting providers. Hosting costs for the first year are usually always significantly discounted and their speeds are better than most shared hosting providers.

So if you’re looking for a cheaper solution (at least initially) and don’t mind having a slightly slower website, then SiteGround is a good choice. Keep in mind that it’s only cheap for the first year, then it gets really expensive (more expensive than Cloudways!).

Final Thoughts

The best web hosting in Australia is a provider with blazing fast speeds, top notch security, stability and world class support.

Simply put, Best Web Hosting Australia = Cloudways.
